lyrics

When I was four, my mum bought me a Baby Born, because my sisters both had one, and that’s what made me trans.
When I was five years old, I got lost in the hosiery department of David Jones, and that’s what made me trans.

When I was sixteen, at a party, I partook of a puff of reefer, and you wouldn’t believe it, but that’s what made me trans.
At seventeen I went to savers, and tried on a ladies blazer, and I found it fit me better, and that’s what made me trans.

When I turned 18, my dad said to me, “son, just do what makes you happy,” and that’s what made me trans.
When I turned 18, my dad said to me, “we just wanna see you happy,” and that’s what made me trans.

So then I got older, and I moved up to the city, and did a bachelor of arts degree, better believe that made me trans.
And one day, at a pub in the inner north I took a piss in a gender neutral bathroom, and that’s what made me trans.

So then I got safe in all the safe spaces, and I kissed all kinds of faces, and I saw all kinds of bodies, and I held all kinds of hands.
And so it came as no surprise when I got into synthesizers, there’s no more slippery slope yet known to man, on the road to being trans.

When I turned 18, my dad said to me, “son, just do what makes you happy,” and that’s what made me trans.
When I turned 18, my dad said to me, “we just wanna see you happy,” and that’s what made me trans.

When I was twenty four, I wore cat ears to a music festival, I was hanging out with a friend of a friend I’d never met before.
Next time I saw that friend of a friend, I just happened to be wearing cat ears again, for an unrelated reason, I guess, or maybe not.
So the friend of the friend, she asked my friend, she said "Sarah what’s the deal with Chris? Is this like, an identity position, I mean, like, is Chris a cat?"
And even though I’m not, I really appreciated the curiosity, it was nice of her to ask, and that’s what made me trans.

When I turned 18, my dad said to me, “just do what makes you happy,” and that’s what made me trans.
Now I’m 33, my dad said to me, “we just wanna see you happy,” and that’s what made me trans.
